DIABETES

Brief Description

Diabetes is a disease involving an inability of the body to move glucose out of their blood cells. The three most common are Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational diabetes.

Risk Factors



 Type 1:
  •  Under the age of 30
  • Caucasian
  •  Family history of diabetes

 Type 2:
  •  Overweight/obesity
  •  Over the age of 55
  •  Native American, African America, or Hispanic descent
  •  History of gestational diabetes
  •  Delivery of a baby over 9 lbs.
  •  Family history of diabetes

Symptoms


  • Constant thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Numbness in the extremeties
  • Feeling either weak or tired
  • Extreme hunger
  • Recurring infections
  • Nausea
  • Slow healing cuts and bruises

Treatment

At the present time, there are several prescription medications available for diabetic treatment. Physicians assist the patient in the proper prescription for the patient depending on the type of diabetes present. In addition, a dietitian will assist in educating the patient on the proper diet. Finally, exercise is a helpful factor in the treatment of diabetes. With the proper care, many diabetics live a normal, healthy lifestyle.
