The Salt Lake Tribune led an investigation into Utah’s worst nursing homes. According to their report, Majestic Care and Rehabilitation Center, Infinia at Granite Hills, and Rock Canyon Rehab and Nursing are the worst nursing homes in the state.
These rankings were based on inspector reports from 2000-2007. When a nursing home violates a regulation, an inspector gives it a “deficiency.” If a resident of a home is hurt, the inspector issues an “actual harm deficiency.” All three of the nursing homes mentioned received over 100 “deficiencies” and over two dozen “actual harm deficiencies.”
The reports from these nursing homes are shocking. For example, a report in 2004 found staff from Rock Canyon ignoring doctor’s orders and refusing to give a 70-year-old patient with brain cancer his medicine because it was “too expensive.” Another case took place at Majestic Care in 2005, when an elderly woman’s hand was severely bruised after a staff member “tugged” her down the hall to the lunch room.
The poor quality exemplified in these three nursing homes is a rarity for Utah elderly care centers. According to the same report from the Salt Lake Tribune, 29% of nursing homes have no harmful deficiencies while another 25% only have one. The average number of harmful deficiencies in Utah’s 93 homes is 3.6. Unfortunately, despite these reports, many incidents of negligence and abuse are never reported.
